From the bloggers point of view, list posts are very easy to plan and write. You can start by brainstorming and jotting down all the points related to your topic. This gives you an idea of what to include in your list. You may not use all the points and even consolidate quite a few of them. In order to write an effective list post, you need to make them unique by adding your own twist, stories and thoughts. This makes your post original and very inviting for your audience.
Listing is a widely used technique in the web, especially among bloggers. If you write a lot of list post in your blog, it becomes monotonous to your audience and pretty soon they will get frustrated and loose interest. So, limit the number of posts you write in this format. Listing is often related as the lazy way of writing but when used sparingly, it can be just as effective as any other kind of composition.
There are lots of reasons why you should frequently write list posts. Some of the top reasons include:
- Lists make your post neat and tidy: Using a list makes your post neat and attractive. This layout is visually charming which in turn, psychologically persuades your reader to read your post.
- Lists make your post more easy to browse: Surveys show that internet audiences love to browse web contents. This means your audience are more likely to scan your post before reading it word for word. A list post makes it easier for them to skim through and find out if the information contained within the post is of their interests. List posts are more effective for browsing if divided into headings, subheadings followed by bullets or numbered points.
- Lists help your post go viral: Social media enthusiasts as well as bloggers are real fond of sharing and circulating lists around the internet. A nicely constructed list can go viral in the web. Thus, it is a great way to bring traffic to your blog.
- Lists can be read faster: List posts can be read faster than other type of posts making it one of the most read types of post.

- Lists can be compelling and complete: If written properly, list posts can be a very influential for your audience. Listing your ideas or views make a complete and compelling argument quickly.
- Lists are good for step by step directions: Lists posts are great way to go if you are giving directions in doing something from start to finish.
- List helps create great title for your post: A Title is one of the most important parts of any styles of writing. Listing ideas helps you create more effective and compelling titles for your post. - Lists post are great conversation starters: Your viewers are more likely to jump into the conversation by adding comments in a lists post. One of the tactics I use as a conversation starter is; use an odd number in the heading. For instance, check the title for this post – notice that I use an odd number 13. Using odd numbers in the title psychologically stimulates your audience to add something to the list.
- List post can lead you to new ideas: Since listing helps you jot down all your ideas from your mind, it also can lead you to new ideas or points that you never thought about before.

Adam…
I totally agree with you…List post is a great technique to write a blog post..
love the new post
Lists are uber at being viral because most people have a perceive amount of knowledge in a particular subject and when they read a number which stands out – say 13 – it peaks their interest because they think “well, I know maybe 7, I wonder what the other ones are”.
Additionally, on the blogger side, you can often break down a list post like a chapter in a book which makes it quick to put together and still hold a lot of value to your readers.

Yes, very true Murlu !!!
Lists can definitely provide a lot of value to a blog posts. Lists do give that perception of ‘Oh! what’s on the list….’
The interesting fact here is that we tend to have more psychological awareness towards odd numbers like 7 and 13…:-)
Great article. I agree list posts are very powerful. If you look at social media sites then you will without a doubt see that the most popular articles are usually list posts. The only reason why you shouldn’t write such posts is because if everything works out you will get social media traffic. And there is nothing wrong with social media traffic as it gives you a lot of exposure. The only problem is that the people are simply not engaged in your content.

I agree, list posts seem to be popular. However, like you say Adam, it would get boring if that’s all you do!
I try and mix it up. Do different types of posts to keep my readers engaged and staying to read and hopefully comment so I can interact with them.

Hello Patricia,
List post is pretty easy to write compared to other composition but since it known popularly as the lazy way of writing a post, I use this method very seldom.
However, it is a lot of fun creating a list post and you are absolutely right; it is always good to mix things up and throw some lists once in a while.
Thanks for your comments Patricia.
