When I decided to launch services in this blog, the idea of offering it in the best possible way chewed my brains out for a while. After spending quite some time brainstorming about my line of attack, it finally hit me – the best approach would be to offer the services as a bundled package.
Bundling or packaging services and products is not a new practice. This powerful technique is widely used in the consumer based society we live in. Entertainment bundles, vacation packages, packaging of food in fast food restaurants and grocery stores, lunch specials, buffet, merchandises in the department stores are some examples of a bundled offers that you may come across on a daily basis.
Benefits of providing products and services in a bundle:
The obvious benefit of bundling products and services is increased sales and profits. But if you think about, there is a lot more involved in this process.
Bundling products and services is the best way to leverage your marketing efforts. You don’t have to spend your precious time and energy on selling products and services individually – rather, you can do it all at once. The less time spend on messing with the products and services mean you save money. Besides, offering the package also helps you push out products that may not do too good all by themselves.
The all-inclusive package is a marketing weapon for merchants and service providers as this is a perfect way to attract the attention of consumers.
When you go to McDonalds or any other fast food place, your eyes first land on the burger specials or combo specials they have. Instead of looking at individual food items at the side, your eyes automatically lands on the combo at first. Why? Because you know that rather than ordering burger, fries and a drink separately; the whole meal is going to be a lot cheaper on you.
The packages that are on sale at your local department stores are always a lot cheaper than if, you buy the individual items. Bundled packages psychologically trigger your client’s attention to the offers as they perceive an increased value in the offer.
What is VALUE to your potential clients and customers?
When you are bundling your offers, you would be able to significantly lower the unit price, greatly increasing the perceived value in the mind of your consumers. The perceived value is the real deal that makes the difference. This impresses your clients and consumers hence, rapidly increasing your chances of making sales.
If you think about it; value is in fact a mental fight between the benefits and the price. If you can find the right balance – more benefits for a cheaper price, your chances of making sales is much more.
Important relations between value, perceived benefits and price:
- When the price goes up and the perceived benefits remain same, the value diminishes.
- When perceived benefits go up and the price remains the same, the value goes up.
- When the perceived benefits go up and the price goes down, the value goes up significantly.
As you can readily see from these 3 relations, in order for the value to go up, you should always increase the perceived benefits more than you should increase the price. You never want the value to go down or else your potential clients are going to pick your competitions over you.
Developing a packaged offer:
The value of your products and services is generated when you package them so it is important to keep the psychology of your consumers in mind while creating services and products.
One of the tactics I used to create the packages I offer as a service is brainstorming the problems my potential customers might be facing and the simplest ways to offer solutions for those problems. After, I target the core problem, I thought about the periphery things I can add to the package that is not going to break me both financially and workwise.
Key things to remember while bundling your products/services:
- The perceived value of products/services skyrockets when you offer something that is going to help solve your potential client’s problems.
- To gain maximum conversions always provide more benefits than the true worth of the package.
- Name your packages distinctly to clarify what is offered. If you take a look at my service page, you will see how I used Platinum, Gold and Silver; Platinum is the best of what I offer and silver is the lowest option while Gold is the middle option. I even decided to throw in the bonus package just for the hell of it (O: Offering multiple bundles each more valuable than the other one is a great upsell option.
- Another key thing that you should note is that the perceived value increases when you offer your best product first and then the other ones respectively in the descending order. Putting out the best of what you offer first adds value to your offers. Besides, you would want to sell the best of what you offer as this means more financial gains. Right?
- Don’t raise the price too much or else it is going to lower the perceived value. On the other hand, don’t price it way too low either. After all, you are doing business and you’d love to gain some profits from what you offer. (O:
- If you can’t offer multiple products or services all by yourself, think about ways to collaborate with others to create products/services bundles. This is a win-win situation for both the collaborator because this leads to more exposure, new leads and hence more sales.
Packaging/bundling is a very powerful marketing tactic that can make a difference in creating that first sale or the extra number of sales you crave every month.
- What are the other benefits of bundling your products and services?
- Do you have any experience with offering a bundled deal?
- Is there anything else you would like to add to the conversation?

Before you go...

I created this blog to chronicle the success and failures of my various online endeavors and to share with you the knowledge I gain along the way...

Hi Adam,
This is a fantastic post and makes me think about your premise. Packaged product definitely offers more value to a customer.
A packaged deal helps in you gaining more reputation than just by offering a product or a service.
However, I have a different scenario when I look at at least one IT product company. I used to work in a ERP/CRM development company( a giant ) before I started blogging. The company had a great reputation as both product and service company. They provide consulting service and charge a bomb for it. However I have been seeing them losing focus with time and losing out both on product and service. Many of the employees working on new technologies had been shifted to maintenance and ticket solving, which they hated like hell.
Now the major customer complaint is about they neither produce a better product nor they solve ticket effectively and I find that its get difficult for a company when it makes more money selling services for the product than from the product itself. That means there is lesser R&D put into product.
I guess that is the price to be paid when a monopoly exists.
However, if it is possible to maintain the level of services that you have been providing to customer, then its just great.
Keep writing buddy. Its just great to read your posts and thanks for the mention below.
Best regards,
Ashvini

Hey Ash!
Oftentimes, maintaining the level of higher customer service can be hard for big businesses. You know, with the deteriorating economy, every one is trying to limit their expenses and are looking for ways to make that extra buck. It is sad in a way but I guess it is what it is (O: On the other hand, it is much easier for Mom and Pop businesses to satisfy their clients without much investments.
Thanks for sharing your insights and experience brother. You always add great value to the conversation.
Appreciated and keep it coming man!
Bundling services can indeed be a great way to reimburse your products a life and your sales a boost. It was really convincing to read how you have given the whole procedure a new outlook.

Thanks Joshua.
Simple bundling of the packages can make a whole lot of difference without much overhead. Besides, it also adds value to what you are offering and your own reputation, especially in terms of internet marketing. So, why not do it? right!
Thanks for the comments man.
Talk to you soon.
Indeed true! When things aren’t working all right for you, why look for new resources? Instead why not make full use of what you have and then invest in new ones.
Thanks for your reply!

Adam,
Great tips on Bundling. Using bundling properly to increase the perceived value of the product is a great tool. Not only are you able to give more to the customer, but there is a scaling factor.
Bundling is like “upsells”. If people buy they often want to buy the “best” offer and “save” with bundling (done right) you give this to them

Yes sir,
The main benefit is the increment in the perceived value in the mind of the customers and when done right does make a huge difference in making sales.
Appreciate the awesome insights brother.
You the best!
Hi Adam:
You have chosen a great topic to write about. It makes sense to bundle products and services, your sales of the associated service or product will increase your total profits, your customer will often come to your site as they are able to find few things at one site instead of looking around. You will save time, by providing customer service of all the products from one site. Have you tried this or are you thinking of trying it?
Make it a super profitable week for yourself.

Fran, great insights and value you have shared with us here.
The idea of writing this post actually came to me when I was brainstorming on providing the kind of services I wanted to provide in this blog. You know, after a lot of thinking and looking around what others have provided I concluded to provide my services in a bundled package. If you take a look at my service page, you can see what I am talking about.
Thanks Fran.
You have a wonderful day!
Hi Adam,
100% you are right, Offering our services or products as bundle will let us get more profit in little effort. I just remembered my computer science “data mining” algorithm which is know as “Market Basket Analysis”. It explains the concepts of merging the things together which are relevant to each other. Generally we can see, relevant things aligned near by places in shopping malls like milk powder, coffee powder, tea powder, sugar and so on , so that people can choose one another without any confusion and there ll be no miss list. Likewise bundling our services will bring us more gain.
Thanks Adam.. jus recalled my lessons..

I also took a basic business course in my freshman year and I remember my lecturer talking about something similar – the concept of merging things together for lower overhead. But you know, this is pretty much common sense stuff most of us are already aware of but do not usually put in practice (O:
Thiru, you are welcome and thank you for sharing your thought and experience here.
Very much appreciated!
Absolutely right, Adam! In fact, I’m currently in the process of creating a site with bundled products so this was a great boost in my direction. Thanks for this!
Morgan, I am glad to be able to provide some kind of boost in what you are doing right now.
Good luck to you and hope to hear more about it soon.
Hi Adam,
Bundling, is a most effective way of providing a great deal.
Getting multiple items (what have you) for one low price sure sure helps in the selling process.
I like that Bundling is a great way to be a step above the competition.
Terry Conti
I think you said it very well Terry. It is a definite way to step above the competition. You can check whatever the competition is missing and include that in your bundle. Now that will certainly catch your potential client’s attention (O:
Thank you for the comments Terry.

Hi Adam,
I have used bundling before (and I think I am currently using it). But I have never thought of it as a marking technique. Nobody taught me this technique and I have never read about it. I just used common sense. Bundling increases the value of your product.
But I have never thought about some ideas here. For example, If you bundle more products, you won’t have to sell them individually. You need more money to do that. Plus, success isn’t guaranteed. Some products can’t do well by themselves.
I am currently selling a product and offering some valuable bonuses to increase the perceived value. My product is about writing and selling an eBook. I thought about products I can offer with my main product. Now, to write and sell an eBook, you first need an eBook software. So I am offering one for my customers. Then you need a website and a thank you page. I am offering those as well. I just used common sense as I told you. I never thought of it as a marketing tactic and don’t know it I am doing it correctly. I guess I have to re-read your post and take some notes in order to improve the quality of my offer.
Thanks a lot Adam for this wonderful post. I am sure it’ll benefit me.
Take care and have a great day!

Mouh;
Bundling is pretty much the basic marketing strategy one can implement in order to increase the perceived value of the products (or services in my case).
It sure seems like a common sense approach if you know the basics of marketing, which I am sure you do since you are offering a product in your blog. But many others are not aware of this simple tactic that can really enhance their chances of making sales.
Glad to be of some help (O: Don’t hesitate to give me a holla if you want us to further discuss this in relation to your product offer.
You take care my friend

Great topic indeed Adam.
I believe since you have the talent to offer these services to others that bundling them all together will not only get you more clients, but they won’t feel like they are always going to have to deal with the upsell. They are great for us profit wise but some people really get tired of it.
I have a friend thinking about offering some services similar to yours so will be sure to send her over here so she can hear your views on this. I believe she’s more of graphics based and at a point in trying to decide which direction to go.
Glad you are moving forward with this and I have no doubt you will be very successful. Overworked maybe a little too! Maybe that’s a good thing though!

I believe the key is right where you said it Adrienne – to bundle relevant things together so that people can really utilize the offers instead of getting tired of it (O:
Graphics huh! I would love to meet the friend you talked about and discuss her approach.
Overworked – Maybe but I think I am barely scratching the surface here (O:
I will be sure to tell her to give you a shout. She’s trying to decide how to set up her services and what’s the best approach to take. You might be able to guide her on that. Thanks Adam…
Oh, I’ll wave at you as I pass through Dallas this weekend. On my way to that conference in the morning. You have a fabulous weekend okay!

Adam,
Hi, this is Linda – first time to you blog, thanks to Adrienne. I am the person she is referring to.
I make my own graphics and can set up website and blogs and I was just basically wondering how to go about this and all that jazz.
Would love to hear your input.
Thanks to you both and I do believe that bundling is an great way to go, versus offering them separate, but I think it depends on the service or product being offered.
Feel free to use my email addy to contact me.
Hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi Adam, my husband is starting a side business so we got a bundle of FiOS + digital phone. That cost less than FiOS alone so it really got our attention.
This topic of bundling reminds me I should write a post on my experience in the coin business. I used to offer coin samplers of 3 or 4 coins with shipping included. This was cheaper than buying them individually, and they also came in a gift bag so they made a nice present. This was also a low cost way to try out my business and see if I was honest and efficient. Many people then came back with a bigger order in the future.
