You probably already know that leaving comments in other blogs is the easiest way to bring traffic to your blog. This method is simple but quite powerful especially if you are a new blogger and want to get some kind of traction in your blog.
If you are a newbie blogger, you need to pay special attention to this method as this can be a great way to increase visitors in your blog. The idea here is to use your comments the right way, as a marketing technique, and reap huge rewards from it.
First of all, how does this work?
You go visit other high profile blogs, especially the ones in your own niche and leave comments. Then a link is associated with your comments which visitors can follow back to your blog. This can also benefit in search engine rankings for your site. If the blog you comment on does not have a no follow tag applied to it then your comments can help you get some search engine juice as well.
How simple is this? Leave comments and get traffic…
But is it that simple?
If it is so simple then, why many people get it wrong?
- Because they don’t know why they are leaving comments.
- They are not emotionally engaged in the conversation.
What most people don’t know is how to leave comments in other blogs the right way. When done the right way, you can reap maximum rewards from your effort. To get results from leaving comments, the first thing you need to do is to stand out of the crowd. Blogs are conversations and you know participating in the conversation is going to get you noticed. But participating without giving much value to the conversation is just going to make you the average Joe in the blogosphere.
If you go above your standard and really engage in the conversation, you are going to stand out. Emotional engagement in the conversation can only be done if you create a surreal connection by giving some sort of ideas or thoughtful contents.
Immersing yourself in their idea or conversation and being passionate about it helps you to be emotionally engaged. Don’t leave comments just for the sake of getting traffic. Remember to add some value to the conversation.
You don’t necessarily need to target a lot of blogs to use this tactic. Just target a couple of blogs in your niche and every time they post a new post, leave some thoughtful comments. But don’t leave comments just for the sake of leaving one. Write 2-3 paragraphs of in depth comments, not 2-3 sentences. Of course, you can’t leave thoughtful comments in every post as you might not have the full knowledge about what the author is talking about. But, you really need to develop this into a habit.
While you are leaving comments, make the the author of the blog your primary target. This helps you to become the part of the conversation and to create your own unique identity with the author. And also pay close attention to what the blog readers are talking about and converse with them as well. They might go visit and interact in your blog if they like your comments.
The benefits of leaving thoughtful comments:
- Builds the conversation and increases your knowledge: When the conversation is thoughtful, it adds value and builds up the conversation which in turn, helps increase your knowledge about the topic discussed.
- Get the attention of blog owners: Leaving quality comment really helps as the author of the blog might start reading and following your blog. Also if you are thinking about submitting a guest article in their blog, they are more likely to accept you as the guest author.
- Get the attention of the audience: Emotionally powerful comments help show your passion and knowledge about the topic discussed. This also entices your audience to click on your link and go visit your blog especially if you are a regular commentator in the blog.
- This is a great chance to add value and build on something what the author has already shared in his/her blog. This makes your audience perceive you as an expert.
- Moreover, this tactic is very beneficial as the conversation you create can give you ideas for your new blog posts.
Now you don’t want to leave comments that does not add any value to the conversation. Even if the comment is polite but there is no engagement, it doesn’t carry any value. And no spam please. It is very frustrating and annoying for us bloggers to deal with spams. If you leave spam, people will recognize you and delete your comments.
All it takes is one insightful comment in one blog everyday to stand out of the crowd. And if the post you leave valuable comments on, happens to be a popular blog you can receive hundreds of visitors from a single comment. Thought provoking and controversial comments are the ones that attract the most attention.
In conclusion
Get started by targeting popular blogs in your niche and utilize this technique to reap the benefits. Don’t leave comments just to get backlinks. Leave interesting comments, not spam and you will be amazed by the number of visitors you will recieive. Leave thought provoking and controversial comments; this is a great way to receive traffic and comments in your blog.
Now it’s your turn…
How do you use the power of your comments for your benefit? Leave comments and join in the conversation to amplify your blog traffic….

I created this blog to chronicle the success and failures of my various online endeavors and to share with you the knowledge I gain along the way...

Hi Adam,
Emotional comments, I like that concept.
I aim to leave insightful comments by reading the entire post and referencing at least 1 sentence or idea from the article. This attention to detail has boosted my blog’s comments, page rank and helped me to develop business relationships with other bloggers.
Thanks for sharing your thoughtful insight.

Yes, I agree with you. The attention to the detail certainly has great benefits.
Like you mentioned, it also helps develop business relationship with other bloggers and increases blog’s comments..
Thank you for your comments…Ryan.

Hey Adam,
You said it perfectly – what most people try to do is add a comment on every blog they visit but it always turns out to be just a sentence or two.
For the blogger, this is almost completely worthless because what real value is it adding?
Not only are you leaving a nasty taste in the bloggers mouth but you’re not really putting yourself out there to the community.
There’s so much opportunity to network with bloggers through comments but you’re not going to get there by leaving one-liners.
Think beyond the scope of just reaching the blog author – you’re also setting an example to other commentors and could increase traffic, build that backlink and help build your level of authority on the subject.
Murlu recently posted..The Single Biggest Reason Why You’re Not Making Money With Your Blog
Hi there,
You are absolutely right Murlu…It sure does set an example to other commentators in the blog…
Many bloggers leave couple of sentences as comments because they are there just for the sake of leaving comments…This is not being involved in the conversation or adding value to what is being discussed.
Comments are a great way to network with other bloggers but if it doesn’t carry any value, it might have a negative impact on your online presence (especially true for bloggers)….
Thank you for your feedback Murlu….
Wow Adam,
I just read a post recently by Alex Whalley about a comment challenge that we were both in and man did he drove the participants up the wall. With that, this post would be a great recommendation to what Alex would suggest to some of the challengers. However, his tone got the best of him and so what ended up happening was it became a big ‘Jerry Springer’ show as he calls it.
The great thing is if your post was written earlier imagine how much greater that would have been to reference.
Overall, I normally accept comments from someone who has a legitimate blog and isn’t advertising anything. One with a real name and not a product.
While I believe some are shy with the 1-2 sentences, after awhile it pours in. But like yourself, I appreciate the feedback that puts in regard what the blogger is saying. That really touches me so. In turn that makes me want to go to their blog to leave a valuable comment as well.

Hey Thu,
I really appreciate the feedback and it is awesome to have you here leaving your thoughtful comments.
I missed out on Alex’s comments challenge. But I am going to go check his blog post out.
Thanks Thu..
There can be terse comments that ask a solid question. But you are right. 99% of the time that is simply commenting for the sake of commenting.
When you do make great comments you can actually drive on the story. There are times that a healthy comment debate can be as interesting as the article itself.
The post Thu mentioned was one. Though there was a fair amount of “arguing” going on in that one, I found it fascinating.

Yes certainly. Sometimes it is interesting to see all the debate in the comment section.
I went ahead and checked Alex’s post after Thu’s mention…very interesting…
Nice article Adam. I am glad you explained how you can easily get more traffic to your blog. The thing is though that most people don’t understand how you should comment. As you’ve mentioned you should somehow engage the blog owner and stand out from the rest of the people.
What I’ve also found is that if you want to make things easier then just visit a blog that has almost no visitors and just leave a comment. That way your comment will definitely be getting attention.
Julius recently posted..How to Build Backlinks the Smart Way
Hey Julius,
That is great if it works out for you. However, I believe that there is a disadvantage in commenting on blogs with almost no visitors.
If there are very little visitors, less people are likely to read your comments or click on the associated link back to your site…What do you think Julius..?
I love visiting other blogs and commenting. I not only get to meet new bloggers I also learn heaps. Also, by sharing it is building up a relationship and this in turn means a community of bloggers is getting to support one another. I believe we all have something to bring to the table. As you know Adam, for me I appreciate help with my techie problems. But I am happy to help with what I can in my chosen niche and also to encourage other bloggers just starting out like me. I know how encouraged I was when my first comments on my new blog started coming, so I like to return the luv and do the same for others.

Hey Adam,
First of all, great to connect with you, this is the first time I’ve seen your blog and it certainly looks great.
Regarding this post, spot on… Couldn’t agree more, putting emotion into comments and really connecting the writer and community helps so much.
Nice to meet you!
Hey,
I am so excited to see your comments here Ben. (I am a big fan of yours.)
It is great to connect with your too and really appreciate your wonderful feedback….
Thanks again…

I was planning on writing a post about valuable comments, as well, but you highlighted a lot of my pet peeves when reading other blogs’ comments. I especially dislike when people leave short comments that make no sense, or when the commenters end up discussing other topics unrelated to the blog post.
Last Sunday on TWiT, they had a good discussion about the value of having comments on a blog. Certain big blogs don’t have comments turned on at all (Daring Fireball and Kottke.org come to mind).
In regards to your question raised earlier in the comments about leaving comments on blogs with zero traffic, I do believe that there is value in leaving those comments for several reasons:
1) You do get noticed because no one is leaving comments
2) People may not be flocking to that post today, but maybe they’ll find it next week, next year, or five years from now. If one person clicks thru to your site, then the comment was worth it, in my opinion.
and 3) You help start the community for that blogger. This is my problem on my site because I may get a small amount of traffic visiting, but no conversation happening except between myself and one commenter. If two people leave comments, that’s an invitation for a third person to jump in.
It also makes the blogger feel good about that piece they wrote. Think of how you felt when you received your first comment from a non-friend? It’s a great feeling to have.
Hello James,
Yes I do remember when I received my first comment..It felt awesome..
Regarding that question James, I agree that it is a great way to start a conversation or start a new community. However, if you put the same kind of effort in leaving comments in a blog with decent traffic, the outcome will be greater and you get the results faster…

“They are not emotionally engaged in the conversation.”
- Comments like “Thanks for sharing!” or “Great posts!”, these are just few examples of nonsense comments for me. Why don’t you just spend time to read the post and to make your comment afterwards than simply add something without thinking too much. Who knows that you might also get some useful information as discussed on the post. I always think that way so that I won’t find commenting as a boring stuff for me to drive traffic to my site.

Thanks for the great post and great commentary stuff.
I liked it much, I had also lots of doubts to receiving traffic this way.
What I have planed is I would target this kind of direct traffic rather than doing SEO. I think SEO has got very complex so you should look for other ways for receiving traffic.
