Many new bloggers face the problem of finding a perfect niche to blog about. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error and quite a bit of work to find the right blog topic. However, don’t let this stop you from starting a blog. The sooner you start one, the faster you are going to find the right niche to blog about and gain the knowledge necessary to build a better blog.
Do you have a plan? I always emphasize on making a plan before starting a blog. And your blog niche needs to be the top priority in your plan. It is important to find the perfect niche for you as this determines your success as a blogger. This is especially true if you are thinking about making money blogging. To be a successful blogger, you need a long term view. Always remember, blogging provides a great branding opportunity but requires a lot of time and commitment. And your success really depends on how much you enjoy writing/talking about the topics you pick.
Have you noticed that all successful bloggers are passionate about their topic and are blogging in their niche for quite some time?
At the beginning of my blogging endeavor, I faced the same challenge about choosing the right blog niche. My first blog was about pets. Now don’t get me wrong here. Even though I love pets, after about three months into it, I realized blogging about pets is not something I could continue for a long time. After a lot of thinking and planning, I started this blog to help people like you start your own successful online endeavors. If you like the contents published here in this site or want the latest tips and advice for your successful online endeavor, please do subscribe to this blog via RSS or via Email.
Recommendation: On a piece of paper, make a list of topics that you are genuinely interested in or passionate about. Listing down hobbies, interests, daily activities that you really enjoy is a great way to get started. Your success lies in what niche you pick so, choose it wisely. If you are confused about picking the right niche, I recommend asking yourself the following questions to narrow it down to the right one.
- Would you be writing on the topic you choose for years and years to come?
- Do you have some knowledge about the topic? If not, are you willing to learn about it?
There are a lot of other things to keep in mind before choosing a niche to blog about. Some of the major points you need to consider include;
1. Passion For the Topic:
The one thing that can determine your success as a blogger is your passion about the topics you choose. Usually what happens is that early bloggers tend to start blogging on the topic they see others blog about. They get tempted to start one just like their favorite blog. This is not the best way to go. As you will be working on your blog for years and years to come, choose a topic that you love talking about. This helps make blogging more fun and enjoyable instead of ‘work’. Blogging about your interest helps you sustain your blog with passion and your audience can tell if you are passionate or not. So, follow your heart.
I know quite a few successful bloggers that started blogging about topic that is quite challenging. Simply because they like challenges and love to grow their passion from that challenge. If you are one of those who gets the rush from challenges, pick a niche that is challenging.
2. How popular is the topic you choose?
There are 2 ways to determine the popularity of your niche. Firstly, you might be real passionate about your topic but what if, nobody else thinks so? You need an audience to read what you write and without them, your blog will never be successful. Having said that, you don’t need millions of people reading the contents you publish. Your blog can be successful if only a small percentage of people regularly read your contents and network in your blog.
Secondly, you need to consider that the topic you choose might already have hundreds and thousands of sites about it. Choosing the right niche that is not already saturated is important. Competing with handful of sites is much easier than competiting with hundreds and thousands of already established ones. It is not impossible to compete and stand out of the crowd even if the competition is huge. But, it sure makes your job a whole lot easier when there is less competition. So find the traffic potential (demand) for the niche you pick. Understanding about keyword research and how to use keywords to get targeted audience to your site is necessary to find the traffic potential for your niche.
3. How profitable is the niche you choose?
If you are serious about making money from your blog, make sure to pick a niche that is profitable. As a blogger, this is something you need to seriously think about. Choosing the right topic plays a huge role in how big and profitable your blog is going to be. Usually, the money making blogs are the ones with a lot of resourceful contents that target wide range of audience.
In order to build a profitable blog you need to know the monetization potential for your niche. To determine this potential, find out how many advertisers exist. You can do so simply by searching your niche and the keywords based on your niche on search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. In the search results, look for the number of Pay Per Click (PPC) advertisers in the sponsored section. The more advertisers you see the better potential for monetization. Keep in mind that more advertisers also means the competition is fierce. If you find a topic of your interest that has decent monetization potential with fairly less competition, you are on the right track.
4. The trend of the topic:
Another essential thing to consider while choosing a niche is checking out the trend of your topic in the web. This is because topics that are in demand right now may not be in demand a year or two years from now. To build a successful blog that is still going to be popular for years to come, I highly recommend you to do your homework. Find out what people are talking about, what they are doing and what the latest buzz is. This helps you build a better blog with long term goals. Web tools like Google Trends and Twitter are some of the great free tools you can use to find out about the latest trend.
5. Are you going to run out of contents to blog about?
The problem that prevails with many new bloggers is they totally stop blogging because they run out of things to talk about. So ask yourself, Is there enough content to write about? Whether you blog once a week or once a day, can you provide unique contents on a regular basis?
If you are knowledgeable about the topic you pick then that really helps you get started in your blogging endeavor. As you probably know by now, in order for a blog to stand out of the crowd, fresh pillar contents are essential. To provide quality contents through various media, you need to be willing to learn new things about your topic. Are you willing to learn more about the niche you pick?
Blogging provides a great opportunity to be successful but the niche you pick determines if your blog is going to be a success or a failure. So, pick your blog niche wisely, do your research before you start blogging about the topic you choose.

Understanding what a profitable niche is and is not is one of the most important factors to MMO. It can be the difference between 300 hours fruitless work with little results and 150 hours of work with great results.
-No matter what there is work involved-
You have pretty much covered most of the important aspects, I think:
Passion
Demand
Marketability (do people BUY in this niche)
Competition (make sure it isn’t TOO saturated, there will always be competition, just make sure it is reasonable)

Thank you for your nice comments…I have to say you are pretty impressive yourself…
@ Steve, It’s great to see your comments here.
Yes indeed…finding and understanding a profitable niche and creating passion to pursue the niche is the difference maker in being successful online.
Plus there is the taking action part or work, as you said,….IF one is passionate about the niche, working on it doesn’t feel like work…
Thank you guys…
Hi Adam,
I believe content is always going to be the main source of your income, while you can rock it once, perhaps down the line, you might lose the mojo, so in looking at other bloggers with a nice competition in mind and also reading their work, you have tons of ideas and conversations to refer. They also keep you afloat as in the mastermind group, for instance. Thus, I do find challenges as the driving force behind my blog. Great ideas, great people and also great growth. That’s my niche. I’m going to leave profits for last because it’s relationship building that helps the blog sustain growth for now. As the demand for the information I put out grows, that’s the hotspot which I know I have to focus on.
Great read, Adam. Thanks for the share!

Hi Thu,
I agree with you. Content is the key.
Checking out the competition from time to time helps gather ideas and knowledge. Plus it motivates a blogger to get better.
Thank you for your comments Thu.
Hi Adam,
Thanks for sharing the comprehensive list. I like how you mentioned check for profitable keywords in a niche; this is something many bloggers overlook.
Passion is where successful blogging starts because passion precedes greatness.

Hi Ryan,
You are welcome. Many bloggers do overlook profitable keywords in their niche. Just like Steve mentioned this could be the difference between many hours of work with fruitless results and less hours of work with great results.

I believe if you are passionate about your chosen niche and done all the proper research about the competition then you are onto a good thing.
I am passionate about my chosen niche and the more I research the more I am learning. I have lots of interested visitors to my site; many who have come from blogs I have commented on. I didn’t know when I was learning about blogging from them that they loved lavenders and are now learning about my niche from me.
