How To Write Effective Headlines That Attract Audience Like Bees To Honey.

Effective headlines

In my last post, Headline Or The Content: Which Should You Write First, I talked about headline being the powerful constituent of your article and  touched a little bit on it’s importance. Today I am going to unveil you the truth about effective headlines and how to write ones that attract audience like bees to honey.

Every time you write a new blog post or an article, you spend quite a bit of time perfecting a killer headline that hopefully sweeps your audience off their feet. You know this is the key to psychologically motivate your audience to take action and become your potential readers or even regular customers.

With the ever increasing number of web pages nowadays, browsing the headlines has become an internet trend. Many of us even use aggregation tools every day to read our favorite contents. And go check out Digg or Delicious – the articles that make it to the top are the ones with the crackerjack headlines.

The Truth About Effective Headlines:

Whether you are writing a blog post, article, email or a sales copy, headlines play a very important role in getting you the results.

Any copywriting expert will tell you that one of the secrets of writing an effective article is to create a headline that grabs your audience’s attention instantly. In order to create your first impression that can give your audience an initiative to read your post, your headlines has to be eye catching. Creating a headline that has the WOW effect is very necessary to gain maximize exposure for your post to go viral.

Down below, I have listed the essentials of a good headline and hopefully these ideas provide you with the knowledge to create your own killer headlines.

Simple, short and direct:

Your headline does not have to be fancy to be effective. One of the best headlines that work wonders are the simple ones that are short and direct to the point. They work great because they help your audience get a clear vision on what your article is really about. I am going to explain a little more on the clarity part in the next point.

Clear:

Being clear about letting your audience know exactly what they are going to get is the fundamental behind great headlines. The ones that are deceiving and do not deliver the value you promise, can be a total disaster to all your efforts. So, keep your headlines clear and convey your audience exactly what they expect to get without deceiving them.

Congruent:

Compelling and intriguing headlines that are irresistible to your audience should also be congruent to your articles. Hence, I always emphasize on delivering the content exactly as what the headlines portrays. The main reason being, your audience is the key to your success and misleading them can be disastrous.

For instance, check out the headline of this post, How To Write Effective Headlines That Attract Audience Like Bees To Honey. As you can tell, being congruent with the headline, I deliver to you exactly what I promised you through the headline.

Give more value:

Making your headline powerful and important by adding more value to it not only makes it eye catching but also helps you write great contents. Understanding your readers, their problems and finding out ways to solve those problems is one of the primary ways you can add value to your headline as well as your contents.

So, What Is In The Making Of Effective Headlines?

There are numerous methods you can use to create the headlines that deliver. Here, I have included 7 simple but very effective ways to create headlines that work every time and trust me these methods never fail:

1) Headlines that raise curiosity and arouse more interest:

There is very little doubt that headlines that raise curiosity or a suspense in your readers mind work the best. For example, something like..Self development for smart people..raises the curiosity in your audience to see if they are really smart or not. Another good one I have recently seen is Help! There is a Yeti following me on twitter.

Using powerful words like..Sure-Fire.., ..Golden rule.., ..Keys to.., ..One and only.., ..Secrets of.. etc also raises some curiosity and interest in your audience’s mind.

2) Headlines that show the sign of urgency:

Headlines that give the signs of urgency compels your audience to take action instantly. Using words like ..For limited time only.., ..Offer valid for 24 hrs.., ..Take action now.. and so on can be especially helpful while motivating your audience to read your email or buy your products.

3) Headlines that are questions:

I already did talk about headlines which raise curiosity are very effective. Well, if you think about it, a headline that is also a question raises instant curiosity. Headlines that start with What, How, Where, When, Why, Are.. etc instantly attracts attention.

Another one that never fails is the headline that starts with How to… Do you need some proof? Just go check out the social media sites like Digg and Stumble upon – How to articles are one of the most bookmarked and linked to contents online. The main reason why how to articles work every time, if the content is congruent, is because the headline really fulfills the promise in telling your reader how things are done.

4) Using a strong verb in front of the sentence:

Another headline that works every time is the one that has a strong verb in front which demands some action. Subscribe to.., Click here.. just to name a couple, are some famous ones in the internet that you are probably already familiar with.

5) Using adjectives and adverbs that amplifies your keywords:

Using adjectives and adverbs like easy, effective, compelling, easily, effectively that amplify your keywords can also be used to create headlines that attract instant attention. Superlatives like coolest, best can also beef up what you are trying to convey through your headlines.

6) Using numbers in front of the headlines:

Using numbers is a great way to write headlines that attract attention. This tactic is especially helpful If you are writing a lists post. This kind of post will bring in a lot of traffic to your blog, in the long run, as they get embedded deep in the search results. A list post is loved by web surfers and is spread around the internet like wildfires. Using numbers in front of the post can also give your audience a compelling reason to take action.

7) Headlines that summon your audience:

This is one of my favorite tactics which I have used quite a bit here in my blog as well. I have found that summoning your audience to do something really compels them to take action. For example, my blog post Bloggers: Are You Promoting Your Blog Post is a good example of a headline that summons the audience.

Lastly, write your headlines to tailor the needs of your audience not the search engines. However, make sure to include your main keyword in your headline for relevancy. This is for SEO purpose so that your audience can also find your post through the search engines. Headlines also enable your audience see your own unique personality. So, it is a good practice to find out what kind of headlines really work for you and use them as a template.

To find the latest trend and ideas on effective headlines it is also helpful to check out other bloggers and publishers to see what is working for them and figuring out if it can work for you as well. Spot on Adam

In my opinion, headlines are often more important than the actual content because anyone can put together a great piece of content with enough time but no-one will read it without clicking through first – and that comes from the headline.

Just like you would with your normal writing, I’d highly suggest for everyone to take time just to practice headlines. Keep writing the headline over and over again, you’ll find each new one is a little more impactful than the last.

    Great headlines make great contents.

Practicing the headline over and over again is the one and only way to find the killer headline that delivers.

Thanks for stopping by…By the way how is your toothache..Hope you are feeling better..

Great post on important aspect of blogging. Catchy titles that erouses curiocity or amazes people and that have keywords inserted in it are beneficial from both aspect. I have some sweet experiences with the headings like ‘Are you too winking at a girl in dark?’, ‘Do you have a face on your head?’. When I changed my post title to these ones, the vote on blogEngage improved compared to ‘Do advertising improve your ranking’ or ‘register gravatar’ etc.
