The Importance Of A Bucket List In Life.

(Last Updated: 10/17/13)

For those of you who are not familiar with a bucket list, it is the term made popular by the movie ‘The Bucket List’. Released in 2007, this is a very entertaining movie about two cancer stricken men (Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson) who escape from their ward and embark on a road trip to accomplish their things to do list before they die. So, what is a bucket list? It is a wish list of all the desires, goals and experiences you want to accomplish in life before you die.

Why a bucket list?

Bucket list helps inspire and clarify the meaningful things in your life by reminding you to act on those things that are important to you. In order to live a happy life, you need to get the utmost satisfaction out of your life. This satisfaction can only be achieved if you accomplish the tasks that really matters to you. Instead of wasting your precious time in activities which are not important in life, focusing on what matters most leads you to happiness. A bucket list helps you achieve that satisfaction by maximizing your potential so that you can live your life to the fullest.

By jotting down your goals and dreams, you move one step closer toward achieving your goals in life. It helps you to be the action taker instead of a procrastinator. It stops you from putting off your dreams of doing things you always wanted to do. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to look back on my life wishing that why the hell I didn’t do this…, when I still had a chance or when I could do it.

I higly recommend you to create a bucket list if you already don’t have one yet. Whether you are young or old, it’s never too late to create a list of your goals. Don’t postpone it saying ‘I will make the list tomorrow or later’. To clarify and focus on what you want in life is very valuable in exchange for a little bit of your time.

How to create an effective bucket list?

To create an effective bucket list, you really need to make this an enjoyable experience. Take some time out of your hectic schedule and sit down to brainstorm and plan your list. Think about the things that reflect your true desires, wishes, dreams, interests and passions. Ask yourself what you want to do in life?

Just think about it this way – If you had a year to live, how would you spend that time?

Learn to prioritize the things that are important to you this very instant. Review the list frequently to add new items or cross out items that you achieve. Remember, it is all about living a fulfilling and happy life.

If you are stuck and don’t know where to start, use the following points as your guide to get your list started:

  1. What are the things you want to accomplish in life?
  2. What are your dreams and goals?
  3. Things you are going to do if you have unlimited resources e.g. Time, Money,….
  4. The achievement that makes you feel like you have lived your life to the fullest.
  5. What are the experiences you want to be part of in your life time?
  6. Any skills or a language you have always wanted to learn?
  7. Any special location you want to visit?
  8. Anybody you really want to meet in person?
  9. Any special occasion you want to be part of?
  10. The activities you always wanted to try but never had a chance.
  11. The most valuable thing you can do for the world.

These ideas are just to get you going. There are hundreds of other things you can probably think of – Sky’s the limit.

How to achieve the things that are in your bucket list?

Many people create a bucket list but do not take any actions towards achieving their goals in the list. Don’t be one of them. Be an action taker and start acting on the things you want to achieve in life. Get organized and start a plan to take action.

To assist you to start taking action, put the list in a place where you can easily see it everyday. Stick it in your notice board, set it up as your computer wallpaper, hang it in your wall,….do whatever it takes. You might need to break down your ambitions into small action plans in order to reach your goals. Sometimes, you need to involve other people around you to fulfill your dreams so don’t hesitate to share your list to people who you are comfortable with. This also helps you get motivated to take action and get more joy out of your bucket list.

Once you achieve a goal, cross it out and write a journal about it. This gives you a great pleasure and motivation to complete other things in your list. Go over the list frequently and prioritize what you want to do next. Prioritizing the list helps you achieve your goals quicker and with ease.

You don’t need to give up on other things in life in order to achieve your goals. Just set out couple of hours a week or couple of days a month or even couple of weeks a year, to work towards what you want out of life. It is simply exhilarating to accomplish the goals you set in life. It makes your life worth living.

I do the same thing, for the most part, by using a dry erase board. I only do what I WANT to do for the day, but compared to a “bucket list”, it is very similar. Great post you’ve whipped up there!

    • Adam Paudyal says:

      Thank you Joe…

Whichever method you prefer….whatever works best for you…whether it is a one day To Do List or a monthly or yearly List….

The most important part is to take action in doing the things in the list…

      Thanks again…

      Hey Matthew !!!

VIP access to every F1 race…Heck ya…I need to add that to my list…

Some of the things that I have prioritized in my bucket list are,
      - setting up an online business…

I really like the idea of a bucket list because, instead of a 5 year plan, you can have the full picture.

The one problem with a bucket list is not setting up steps to help you achieve those goals. Yes, you can write them down and hope you accomplish them but it’s very important to find out what you need to do to accomplish them.

Oddly enough, my main item I’d like to do before I kick the bucket is to hold a music festival. I know it’s completely irrelevant to my blog but I love going to festivals – I plan to dump all my savings into holding an epic one.

    • Adam Paudyal says:

Holding an epic music festival…That sounds awesome…Murlu..

The way I do it is create a bucket list as well as a daily to do list….This way I know what I need to do today to achieve the things in my bucket list…

You are absolutely right…It is essential to find out what you need to do this instance to accomplish them…

Thank you for your comments Murlu…

  4. Emily says:

    Hey Adam,
    I have quite a few too….
Riding horses, big time. You see I love horses.
    go visit Holland and France.
Maybe bungee jumping, maybe because I am not sure about it yet. Well you know it looks pretty scary…..
    Great post man. You ROCK.

    Amy :)

  5. Adam Paudyal says:

Thank you for sharing some of the things in your bucket list…

Yeah…traveling to Europe is in my list as well….

    Good luck…And ..Don’t forget to take action…

  6. Amy says:

Yeah…I totally agree with Adam….There is no point in creating the list…If we don’t take action in accomplishing the list…

Playing drums, Traveling to Australia, making a million dollars are some of the things in my list….

One of my wishes was to start up my own business…as you say Adam; never too old ;-) so once I monetize my blog that is one dream that is coming to fruition.

My other wish is once I start being a successful business that I can give bigger contributions to projects I believe in that will get people out of poverty and give children who are orphaned a start in life.

Thought provoking post Adam and I like that you say write it down and read it. Good reminder for goals to achieve.

Only when that movie came out did I realize that my bucket list has been in existence since early childhood. Last year I realized nothing had changed. The bucket list here is not one of what to do before leaving the building but a list of things to do period. This list has always been one to do asap or sooner. There have been many edits and hopefully will be many more. As things change with time, so do to-do lists.

  10. [...] before. As a matter of fact, I have already covered damn near 5 pages of my notebook with the bucket list of things I want to do in my life [...]

  11. LOL, can I just say Adam, I had the same post schedule for next week! What are the odds!!

Oh well, maybe I’ll still do it, add a spin on it and link it to your article. ;-)

Anyway, great post and although I do not yet have a bucket list, it’s on my to-do list to create b/c I think it’s a great idea to write out the things you want to achieve in life.

There’s no better sense of accomplishment than marking off things you have set out to do and have done.

Exactly Michele..The feeling I get form marking off the accomplishments in the bucket list is simply amazing..and when I go over the list later on, seeing what I have achieved so far motivates me to work towards crossing off more.

I would love to read your spin on the bucket list Michele. Can’t wait to read it (O:
