If you are a blogger, you know that the content you publish online is what makes or breaks your blog. Quality content plays a very important role in making your blog sticky. It is what makes your readers to return to your site repeatedly.
In my post 7 Sure-Fire Ways To Find More Blog Readers I talked about how frequently creating keystone articles is the key to attract more readers. I use the terms keystone article(s) or keystone content frequently throughout this blog as well as on the guest posts I have written. Even though I regularly and interchangeably use these terms and talked about the concept, I have not written an exact definition for it yet. The definition is pretty much self-explanatory when we look at the meaning of keystone.
Keystone is actually defined as;
1. The central supporting element of a whole.
2. Something that is necessary to connect a number of other related things.
3. Headstone – wedge shaped stone of an arch that locks its parts together.
Just like the wedge shaped stone of an arch that locks rest of the other parts together, keystone content is the necessary support system for you to build your blog around.
In simple terms, they are the content which is so important that without them you would not have a concrete foundation to expand your blog on. They are the dazzling articles you write that are so outstanding, they make your blog stand out.
They are the content that is going to be truly helpful to your audience for years and years to come. They are the articles that awe-inspire your readers and compel them to take action. That pretty much sums up what keystone content is about. Those are also some very good justifications as to why these articles are so important. I also came up with some more reasons why you need more of these articles in your blog. Here are the 21 reasons why;
- Just as a building without a sturdy base wouldn’t be able to withstand the unforeseen calamities or the rapid alteration of nature, a blog without keystone content is not going to survive the swift changes in the blogosphere. Basically, these kind of content are the essential foundation for your blog, especially if you are a niche blogger.
- The more you create these kind of articles, the more your audience (including other bloggers) will want to revisit you site. Since these kinds of articles are loved by your readers, it greatly helps strengthen the bond with them.
- These articles are jam packed with valuable tips, advice and tutorials on carrying out specific tasks which your audience can readily implement by taking action. They are highly likely to be bookmarked as your readers can refer to it whenever necessary.
- Keystone content can be truly beneficial in the long run as they can be leveraged and repurposed time and time again. Plus they will be great reference for future keystone articles as these articles can lead you to more ideas.
- The more of these content you create the more your blog gets flooded with comments and backlinks. After getting tones of backlinks, the articles will help you get traffic from the search engines as well.
- Creating more keystone content makes your blog more relevant and authoritative to your audience. This makes your audience see the confidence in you. They perceive you as being an expert – enough to teach them how to solve their problems.
- Keystone article is what separates you as a blogger from the ever crowded blogosphere. It is what makes you the purple cow.
- These articles are independent of time; meaning they stay valuable for years and years to come. Without these articles your blog would be mediocre.
- A list post like this one is a perfect example of keystone content which carries a lot of value but is not that hard to create.
- Creating keystone articles involves doing a lot of research which greatly increases your knowledge of the subject matter.
- Even long after these articles are published they continue to bring in readers, comments and trackbacks giving you the maximum exposure.
- These articles get shared in social media outlets like crazy helping your content go viral.
- You may only need a subtle push to promote these articles as a lot of promotion is done by the content itself.
- These articles are not only a great way to brand your blog but also presell your skills and services.
- Keystone content really helps to funnel your readers into wherever you want to send them.
- These content don’t have to be superb from the start. You can slowly and gradually add (or deduct things) to make them truly a keystone.
- Related keystone content can also be assembled together to form products, eBooks and other informative materials.
- You can easily showcase the related keystone content in one article making the latter a keystone in itself.
- Your keystone articles can also be info graphic (more pictures and images than words) which nowadays is quickly becoming one of the most effective ways to write blog posts.
- Your definition post becomes keystone when you define a key term in your niche (this post is a good example). Instead of linking to some external definition, creating your very own definition post and linking to it, greatly reduces the bounce rate and increases your page views.
- It is always wonderful to put forward your own theory or concept and tell your readers how things should be done in real life. Articles like these can turn out to be very controversial. Keystone content that creates controversy is a great way to stand out.
Can you think of any other reasons as to why a blogger should create more keystone articles?

I created this blog to chronicle the success and failures of my various online endeavors and to share with you the knowledge I gain along the way...

Looks like this is my kind of writing.
Thanks much, Adam.
Another step in the dash for the stash.
Yup brother..time to turn that lemon into lemonade..what do you say ???
If a person has been out of the blogging loop for a period of time and feels “stale”, we can use the Facebook style wake up of “poking” – slightly nudging your readers with a gentle elbow or finger in the ribs so to speak. One of the best poking methods is new content. This is what is happening here as we kick this around. In creating content, links are formed, old links renewed – the best renewer is new content. The other great renewer is new additions to already created content. This is being done here also. Then you get out there and “poke” everybody and let them know there’s new content in town so they can come get it.
Looks like you are on the right track and there is impending explosion.
Hell, yes!
Thank you brother for the support!
It is time to go around and poke as many people as I possibly can.
So, off I go… (O:
Hi Adam,
Well, i need that. Just one reason is enough to convince me keystone article is the way to go and you give me 21. I guess it all comes down to being helpful, relevant, informative and timeless for keystone articles. We will surely see a difference on our blog if we can achieve that. This is what makes us stand out from so many blogs out there. Thanks for sharing brother.
Lye
Lye, how you doing buddy?
It does boil down to the article being timeless. That is what keystone content is all about.
Thanks for stopping by my friend.
Talk to you soon.
I have to agree with everyone else Adam, great job. And you gave us 21 reasons these types of articles are worth our time. That’s what I call really helping us out. Thanks for sharing these fabulous tips with us.
Hope you’ve had a wonderful holiday and your weekend has been terrific.
~Adrienne
You are welcome my friend. I did have a blast. I got to spend quality time with my loved ones..How was yours?
How much turkey did you eat? (O:
Take care.
I had a wonderful time Adam and spent it with my family as well. I ate way too much food but my Mom cooks a lot. I do it every year and I’ll never stop. Just way too good to pass up.
I know what you mean Adrienne…especially Mom’s cooking huh (O:
Absolutely! One of these days she won’t be around to feed us so I get it while I still can.
True! Now I really miss my mum. I haven’t had her cooking in almost 8 years. Hopefully I can go visit her in Nepal pretty soon!
Keystone content : yes that is the key . Great content will always keep getting traffic from search engine. Great content probably will define what your blog is all about.
All of them are great points. Also in my opinion, it is better to do a small bit of keyword research before starting on the content. That way you know if you can get the right traffic.
The best part is that keystone articles comes from inside our head so they are unique and what makes our blog stand out.
Thanks for sharing this bro
Keyword research is a must in order to rank for the key terms in your niche. There is no doubt about it. Unless of course it is just a rant post like I sometimes publish (O:
And what you said is very true my friend. Keystone articles define what your blog is all about.
Appreciate the insights buddy.
Will talk to you soon!
No need of convincing here. It is essential in so many ways that at least a percentage of blog posts are these “keystone” ones.
Like you say, they increase your knowledge and provide a way for people to find you…and of course reward the people that read it with some good actionable tips/leads/ideas etc.
It should not take a lot of convincing that these articles are a lot better than, “5 reasons why blogging is Good” articles
