7 Titanic Lessons Learned Since I Started Blogging.

titanic

Couple of days ago as I was browsing through my archives, I noticed that I was almost to my 100th post mark. The hundredth post is really not a special milestone worthy of a celebration but in a way it is. Honestly, when I started writing on this blog at August 1st 2010, I never thought about making it so far.

Well, now that I am writing my 100th post today, I figured I would make it a little special. And what better way to make it special than to write about the important lessons I learned ever since I started blogging.

Since I started this blog, I have come across some really nice people: People that I admire and follow religiously. And of course the people that follow me. I am not going to mention any names this time around because the list is going to be too extensive (O: From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for everything. I sure have been through a lot of ups and downs in my blogging endeavor but you guys always help me keep going. You help me carry on; motivate me especially when the going gets tough. I truly appreciate my audience. You Rock!!! Without your support and encouragement, I wouldn’t be here today.

Now that you know how I truly feel, here are some life as well as blogging lessons I learned so far from my blogging endeavor:

1. Time is the greatest asset ever:

Before I started blogging, I had a huge desire for physical things in life. Possessing more physical things that I wanted seemed to satisfy me and make me happy. I would spend a lot of money buying the latest video games, latest greatest albums by my favorite artists, collecting the newly released movies, buying brand name gears and kicks…the list goes on and on…

Well, I guess I was young and ignorant back then because as soon as I started becoming a responsible blogger and a family man, there has been a shift in my mindset. As one responsibility started to stack on top of another, I started seeing the benefits of embracing the minimalist approach in life.

I realized that it is not the physical things that I possess make me happy. Neither is it the money. It is all about how I utilize the time I have. I began to notice that the more I spend my time on the things that mattered most to me and the things that made a difference in my life, the better I felt about myself. This is the source to my true happiness. Which is why, I say time is the greatest asset ever.

Time is more precious than anything else in the world. Time is life. And the more we are able to manage our time, the more successful we can become. I realized that time is limited but there are no limitations on what we can accomplish during that time. But in order to do so, we must seize the day as the Latin saying goes; Carpe Diem.

2. The importance of being myself:

I am who I am and I can never be someone else. However, I sure can try harder every day to refine myself into a better me. Just like that, my blog is a reflection of myself and it is what it is but there are always ways to improve it.

I am going to be real honest with you here. During my early blogging days, I always envisioned myself as someone else who I was not. Sure enough, my blog posts reflected that vividly. As I became myself instead of this fictitious character in my head, I realized that my audience became more engaged with me and appreciated what I put out regularly in my posts.

I have come to the conclusion that the value I provide in my blog posts is only half of the battle. The other but significant half is how I relay the content in my blog post -  laced up with my very own personality. Of course, adding significant value to what you write in your blog is important but it is not only the value your audience is looking for. How you balance your personality and the value in your blog is what makes the difference in your blogging endeavor.

3. How I need to deal with fear and take action:

During my early blogging days and well before I even started my online endeavors, the fear of not being good enough was predominant in me. It was not letting me get to my true potential. The fear became so prominent that it led me to procrastinate doing the everyday things that needed to be done. I even procrastinated on doing the things I loved doing. Excuses covered me up from top to bottom. That was when I hit the rock bottom.

That day, I still clearly remember was the day when I was so down that I was no longer happy with myself. I couldn’t believe my eyes on what I had become. Things began to change a lot when I started thinking  about how I was going to live the rest of my life knowing that I am the one to blame for not succeeding.

Once you are committed to doing the things that you truly want and stop doing the things that are giving you no long term benefits or happiness; you are going to find enough time. So if you really think about it, it is not the time you are lacking but the commitment to make it all happen. It is about taking action; doing the things that need to be done – the things that give long term benefits and true happiness no matter what your fear is!

4. The importance of building momentum:

Blogging is a long term commitment and so is anything else that is worthwhile in life. From day one, I knew I had to be persistent in my blogging approach but in reality I did not have a clue what kind of persistence was necessary. It is being persistent enough to build on the momentum and create the necessary traction if I am to achieve something in life.

We all know that success can’t be achieved in a day. You know the great pyramids of Giza were not built in a day. It took generations to build one of the world’s greatest structures. This helped me realize that in order to achieve anything BIG in life, I have to take the opportunity and ride the momentum wave. Whether it is for personal development, lifestyle design, blogging, whatever it is; building momentum is the key.

I have been through lots of ups and downs and know for sure that there are more ups and downs for me in the future. However, I know that if I stay passionate about the important things that matter to me, there are going to be more ups than downs. Talking about passion, here is my next point:

5. Never say you are (or you are not) passionate till you really get involved:

We hear it all the time – Being passionate about what we do is directly related to how successful we become. Passion is the key to success: How many blogs you visit say this time and time again? Well, because this holds true to whatever you do.

But it just so happens that you can’t really be for sure if you are passionate on things without really getting involved for quite some time. Years ago, I postponed starting a blog because I wasn’t passionate about writing. It took me about 6 months of writing in this blog to finally realize that I had developed a passion in writing. Online endeavors is my passion but sharing it as blog post is something that I have come to be passionate about over a period of time. So you know, oftentimes, the passion will come to you once you get more involved.

Another scenario I have faced and some of you may have come across this already; you think you are real passionate about certain things but later down the road come to realize that you were not really passionate about it after all. There was a time when I wrote articles on a blog, which is no longer in existence, for three months and come to realize that I wasn’t passionate about it. So, it is not easy to find out if we are real passionate about things until we really get involved.

6. Pleasing everyone out there is an impossible task:

I have grown to become a people’s person. I love people, helping people and talking to people. But things weren’t like this from the start.

I used to be very unsocial. Working as a sales person for couple of years did help me fight this to a certain extent. But blogging really opened my eyes on how I was missing out on the opportunities that I come across, if I didn’t work on being more social.

Things have changed drastically for me now but I know for a fact that I can’t please everyone out there. No one can. It is simply impossible. No matter what you do and who you become there are always going to be critics.

I also came to realize that the more I climb up the success ladder, the more naysayers I accumulate (O: Of course, this is natural and the best way to deal with this is not to dwell on what they say. Just think about all the other people that get inspired by your work. No hard feelings to my critics here, but most of the time you guys are more motivating for me to keep on truckin’ (O:

7. Always surround myself with successful people or people who crave success:

Over the course of this past 11 months of my blogging journey, this certainly has been the biggest lesson I learned. It is very hard to start seeing any significant change in life until and unless, we surround ourselves with successful people or people that are motivated and dedicated to succeed. This has a ripple effect as you will start to see the same kind of motivation and dedication in you that the people you are around possess.

Nothing could be further from the truth – To be successful, one has to be around people that work for success. This gives me the flashback on the advice that my mum used to give me all the time while I was growing up. She told me to be careful who I associate with. Well, she sure wasn’t lying because I see that the opportunities are present if I am surrounded  by people that are motivated and dedicated. And the beauty of the internet is that you can associate with people that are successful from any part of the globe.

Okay, enough of my ramblings for today. Let’s hear some of the lessons you learned in your blogging endeavors or other incidences that have changed your life.

    Hi Adam

Thanks for sharing your journey with us and the lessons you have learnt over the past 11 months.

I feel I too have learnt heaps and much has been learnt from the generosity of more experienced bloggers/marketers sharing poststhat have helped move my blog forward.

Being ourselves is an important one too. Like you rightly point out, it is important to be who we are and not someone else! I so agree with that statement. Anyway, I figure people see through fake and what is the point??!! It’s enough just being me;-)

Patience is a great virtue, and when blogging one needs to be patient.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so it’s ok if you’re not immediately successful. As long as you keep your faith and determination, everything will be fine!

“other incidences that have changed your life” – The morning I left the small town I grew up in for the last time. There was an ice storm. I was going to work in an unheated tobacco warehouse for minimum wage, after having tried the student, factory, and farm, lives. At that time I didn’t own a vehicle. I said “No más”, went back home, packed a backpack, and hitch-hiked to Gainesville, Florida, eliminating one problem, that of the cold. Next short period I was in Fort Lauderdale landing a job at “Kotex City”, a supply warehouse for paper products, eliminating another problem – job/income.
Just now realizing – I ain’t looked back since! The grass was really a lot greener on the other side of the fence.

No mas huh! It is funny how hard it is to change what we are so used to doing everyday. But you know change is essential.

I have been thorough a lot of ups and downs as well but I am to the point where I just don’t want to look back but keep on moving forward.

Thank you for sharing your experience here Scannerman. You certainly have lived an intriguing life so far (O:
