Do You Leverage & Repurpose Your Blog Content?

It is common sense that the more content you share out there in the web, the more visible you become. Being more visible leads to more clients and opportunities but writing new and original content day in and day out can be very time consuming.

The common scenario that is predominant in bloggers is that they write a blog post once and then totally forget about it. Why not leverage it to its true potential instead of just letting it go unnoticed, buried in your archives? If you haven’t really promoted the heck out of your articles, particularly the keystone ones, you are truly missing out.

So, why don’t you dig through your archives, find the keystone articles and start using some of the techniques I mention here to leverage and repurpose them.

There are many ways of leveraging your existing content. Most probably, you are already utilizing some of the techniques I mention here. But there might be some that you are not yet aware of.

Using social media outlets:

I bet you are already conscious about leveraging your content and sharing it in popular social media sites – Twitter, Facebook, Stumble Upon and such.

If you use plugins like sharebar or shareholic in your blog, sharing your content in social sites can be as easy as a click of a mouse. And the very effective way of doing this is by targeting couple of social sites and regularly using them instead of trying to use many different sites at the same time.

The reason being, once you get to know your blogging buddies who also regularly use these sites, they are highly likely to comment and take part in the discussion with you.

One of my favorite social sites out there is Blokube as a lot of my blogging buddies also regularly use this. Besides, it also has sharing buttons you can readily use to vote and promote your posts straight from your blog. For more on this site, be sure to read this blokube review I recently wrote.

Submitting in article directories and as guest posts:

The theme of one article can serve multiple purposes. You can literally rewrite one article into many different articles with a twist and submit as guest posts or in article sharing sites. This is one of the best ways to repurpose your already existing content.

Guess what? If you are going to submit in article directories, you don’t really have to rewrite anything. If you are wondering about being penalized for duplicate content, my friends – there is nothing to worry about. Despite popular belief there are NO penalties for duplicate content.

WordPress really makes it a whole lot easier to share your articles in article directories; Ezine in particular. After the recent changes in Google’s algorithm, you might be having second thoughts on submitting your articles in article directories. You can still benefit from these article directories as long as you write articles that are engaging like blog posts; not spinning the heck out of them using article spinning software and overly emphasizing on SEO.

Using alternate forms of media:

You can be more creative in using various mediums to leverage your already existing content. The more alternative form of media you can repurpose your contents to, the larger would be your online reach.

Some creative and effective ways include:

Videos and slide shows:

You can create a simple video based on your content with you in it, create a PowerPoint presentation or one of my favorites – screencasts. You can readily share the videos in YouTube to attract a totally different congregation of visitors. If you create a PowerPoint presentation, you can repurpose it again and share it in sites like slideshare.

Audio:

Besides videos, this is another popular way of repurposing old content. This is something I haven’t done yet but sure is in my ‘to do’ list. Damn! That list keeps on getting bigger by the minute (O:

Some of the ways I have seen other bloggers do it is by repurposing contents and converting them into audio recordings. Or even converting audio files into a podcast and distributing it on iTunes.

Some Additional Tips:

Linking to old posts:

One of the easiest ways to leverage your old blog post is by linking it on the new posts you write. If the link is relevant to the topic under the radar, it not only helps in the overall SEO but also is a great way to get your old post noticed and read. Mind you, this also helps in reducing the bounce rate.

Re-purposing content for eBook and Email Newsletters:

Leveraging already written content and repurposing it in email newsletters is going to save any blogger a lot of time. I know I have neglected my email newsletter to a certain extent but this technique is what I am going to utilize to get the grip back. Similarly, you can readily use the content you have already created and congregate the related ones and convert them into an eBook or a special report of some sort.

Using PDF and print buttons:

Shit! Leveraging content for repurposing really is so easy and simple to do. You can simply use a button to print and convert your post into PDF files as I have done in this post. This makes it easier for your readers to print and share the optimized version of your blog post and also makes it easier for you to share it in various document sharing sites.

Kindle your blog:

Kindle Blogs are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle and updated regularly so your readers who use kindle can stay current with your blog. This is a new trend that sure is picking up on bloggers as the kindle users are increasing at an astounding rate. So, why not kindle your blog and leverage it to a totally new group of readers?

Why not re-purpose other blogger’s content?

You can also leverage and repurpose relevant content created by other bloggers in your community. This can be fun and creative at the same time but you have to do it the right way. Check out the post titled My 394 Words On Making Money Online Mindset to see how I did it.

Revisit old posts and optimize it:

Last but not the least, repurposing existing content also means going back to your posts, adding related links or even adding affiliate offers, advertisements like AdSense, optimizing it for SEO and so on.

You know, whatever way you can benefit by using and reusing your articles to a maximum potential. This is what leveraging and repurposing your already existing content really is all about.

    Hi Adam!

People tend to think that if they make a blog post about something, then that content can’t be made into anything else.

But they’re so wrong! Just like what you’re saying, they can take that blog post (or even a snippet) and turn it into a podcast or record yourself reiterating the subject in a video.

The possibilities are endless, and while it may take a lot of work, it really pays off in the end!

    Cheers for this great post!

    Hi Adam:

You always write outstanding posts. Leveraging blog contents is a good idea. you said it can be submitted to the article directories, Ezine article has stopped publishing blog posts as articles on their site, and usually one trend goes all over.

However, the rest of the strategies are okay to use blog posts. But then again the blog posts have to be re written. Or it will not be indexed.

So, take care of the few measures and our blog posts are ready to be rep-purposed.

    Awesome suggestions

Thanks for pointing that out Fran. I wasn’t aware that one can no longer submit blog posts on Ezine using the Ezine plugin.

After the changes in the Google algorithm, Ezine disabled the plugin. So, the only way to do it now is to rewrite the article(O:

      Appreciate the info Fran.

    I completely agree with you!

Its not just about writing masterpieces at once and then having them get buried into the archives deep down. I must say that leverage is a nice option to get the most out of your articles.

Great points Adam and ones I haven’t been fully utilizing.

I guess I really never gave it much thought once I write my posts, I move onto something else. But thanks for these great tips. May have to seriously put some of this into action. Right now all I really do is share on social media sites and shoot videos from my content. Now I have other options to consider.

    Thanks again, great stuff!!!

It is awesome that you are shooting videos leveraging your blog content. This is something that I would like to do more often as well. I have created some screen casts but really want to speak in front of the camera (O:

It is very egotistical to think that even your most rabid fans have read and memorized everything you have written.

Therefore there is no reason not to repurpose it. If the content is valuable people will love it in its new format, be it rewritten as a guest post, a podcast or as an ebook.

Relatively recently I did just that. I had a series of posts on writing ebooks. I bundled them together. I rewrote about 10% of the material and added about 10%. But really it only took me a few hours of work and few bucks for a graphic.

I then gave it away as a 100% free download. (not even a email list subscription) I have gotten a lot of positive letters and goodwill from that…
all from what is really re-purposed content.

It works and it is not hard to do.

Awesome Steve. You are right! It works and is not really hard to do. Now, I have to keep that in mind for the eBook I am writing right now.

Thanks for the insights Steve. You always add great value to the conversation in this blog.

      Appreciated!

Thanks for this great post! I have been thinking about repurposing my blog posts lately. I thought PowerPoint slides would be great. I have collected a list of websites where you can share slides, but haven’t started yet. I am still thinking about the effectiveness of slides. I guess I need to give it a try and test things before judging. : o)

Thanks again for the great post and tips.

    Hi Adam,

I do repurpose my content from time to time but there are so many things I have not done ( such as screen cast). Sometimes , when my articles are pushed down by others in SEO race, I go do an optimization and push them back to the top.

Also a new ebook that I am creating will also have a lot of links to my prev. posts.

Thanks for showing a lot many ways to do something with forgotten contents.

    Best regards,

Screen cast is my favorite way of re-purposing old content. It is fun and take relatively little time to do.

    Adam,

    It’s all about leverage – I agree.

I’m in a process of creating an e-book out a big post I made earlier and giving it away free (just like Steve is doing).

Have you noticed any differences between the re-purposing methods: is there a method which is more effective than other?

That is so awesome Timo. I am in the process of writing mine as well.

Using various media, particularly audio and video is the way to go as they are the most effective methods, if done right. I also really like the idea of re-purposing related posts to create a lead magnet.
