Network With Elites In Your Niche To Leapfrog Over Your Competition.

leapfrog

If you read my recent article on influence marketing, you probably know that links and referrals from the elites in your niche are essential for your blogging success. Networking with the elites in your niche is the fastest way to get traffic, build up your brand and leapfrog over your competition.

Let me give you a scenario here – You have been rigorously working on your blog for months but you hardly get any traffic, let alone regular comments on it. You want more visitors, readers and commenters in your blog. Who wouldn’t, Right?

But, how can this be done? How can you effectively promote your brand online; get more traffic, comments and increase your blog’s exposure?

Well, we all know that in order for this to happen, first thing you need is great contents in your blog. Other things you can do include commenting on other blogs, guest posting and so on; which can be tedious and time consuming with a very little conversion.

And then we have influence marketing. This is one of the techniques that smart bloggers often use to build bigger audience quickly.

One BIG delusion..

One big misconception that prevails among bloggers is that we often tend to look at elites as unreachable.

We forget that they are humans just like us – with emotions and all. So there is no doubt that they are going to act positively to the ones that want to befriend them. Wouldn’t you if you were the leader in your niche?

Maybe you have already tried connecting to the elites in your niche. Maybe you even wrote an email pitching for help while trying to promote your blog but they simply ignore you. No matter how many times you try, it doesn’t seem to work. Hey, I have been there so I know how it feels (O:

One thing for sure; if you know the blogger on a personal level or if you are friends with him/her, this is going to be a lot easier on you.

How do you pitch to the elites and get positive response?

So, how do you actually get an A-lister to listen to you if you don’t know them personally or have never connected with them? Just by sending one email, couple of tweets of their posts and occasionally leaving comments in their blog; the chances of having them refer you to their followers is next to nothing.

What you really need is a strategic plan to target them effectively. To be able to get any kind of feedback, you need to have them get to know you better and build some kind of trust. The key here is to make the elites like you, trust you and befriend you. Otherwise, they are just going to view you as a competition, an enemy not a friend.

Networking with the elites, however, can be a pain and the process can be a lot easier if you focus on one person at a time.

This can be a nerve racking process if you don’t have a plan. First thing you are going to do is look for the probable prospects that you think are likely to reciprocate with you and list them. Their power, how much influence they have in the niche are some important factors to consider while making a list. Your main priority should be to target the ones that can send you targeted traffic and build up your brand.

So, what do you do? Focus on a few that are likely to reciprocate but are active and have some kind of impact in the community.

Blogging communities like blogcatalog, Technorati, mybloglog, blokube etc. are some awesome place to find some big dogs in your niche.

Why you need a list?

The main reason why you need a list is so that you can gradually work on getting the blogger in question reciprocate or else you can move on to the next prospect on the list.

Reciprocation is really the key for cross promotion around the web. If the blogger doesn’t want to reciprocate then you have to move on. Flattery works wonders while reciprocating. I mean, our whole society is based on reciprocation – doing favors for somebody that does favors for you – we always tend to do favors for somebody in hopes of getting favor back. It is in our nature.

A list also helps you enable to allot the time you are going to spend with each prospect, depending on what kind of favor you are wanting from them.

Here are some of the things you can do to enhance the relationship to see if they reciprocate:

And start organizing the list in terms of how they reciprocate. Now one thing for sure; you have to do favors before asking for one.

This is when the list comes in real handy – write down what favors you do for them and what they do to you in return.

Another benefit of keeping a list is that it comes in real handy when befriending a blogger and turn them into a long term assets.

Taking Action is the most important part of the whole process.

You should really work on building awesome relationships – take it to the next step where you are not just their regular readers or followers – you are their supporters in everything they do.

Ok, you made a list of prospects but if you don’t take action in following them, tracking them and further building the relationship; it isn’t going to work. Is it?

You could either stay as a lurker that just read the contents or you could really be active in leaving comments, promoting; all that good stuff (O: You can also use this as a foundation to voice your opinions and connect with others in a personal level. It is also okay to disagree at times and voice your thoughts, however.

It all boils down to basic things like being visible, taking advantage of the situation, making as many friends as possible and very few enemies. (of course, you can’t please everyone).

Besides all these, also avoid doing things that can really ruin your reputation like lying about how much money you are making online in order to be influential as these bum marketing techniques can really kill a brand; which we often see prevailing in the blogosphere.

    Hi Adam,

Excellent article. For long i have been hesitating in networking with the A-lists bloggers as they seem unapproachable to me. You mentioned something that is all true. They are humans too. I believe if you keep on giving favors sooner or later they will take note of us at certain times. Even if they don’t reciprocate, we will just move on as you said.

    Thanks for sharing brother.

      Hello Lye,

Right on man. They are humans just like us which means they are susceptible to emotions. Now, if you can provide a steady flow of positive emotions along with favors, they are going to reciprocate. It is just that there is going to be time and effort involved during the early stages of relationships.

If you think that they are not reciprocating, you have to move on to another prospect. This is the beauty of keeping a list of prospects. I am glad you agree with this Lye.

      Happy new year brother.
      Talk to you later.

    Hi Adam

Hope you have had a good holiday break and enjoyed the time spent with your family. I agree that it is beneficial to network with those we consider know heaps more than us.

I have come across a lot of experienced bloggers after either visiting their blog or commenting on lots of blogs and them lurking on my site and then starting to comment on my blog.

Don’t follow some of the biggest bloggers now. Prefer to be part of a community and anyway some of this community I am part of has some very experineced bloggers whom I am learning from.

We don’t know who we will bump into in the blogosphere and by blog hopping, commenting regularly and adding to the conversation on other blogs; we could just be interacting with a potential “big blogger” of the future :-)

I had awesome holidays Pat, despite being really sick late Christmas day. I got a flu and was bed ridden for couple of days. How was your holidays?

Networking with other bloggers is really the key and I know you agree with me (O: Networking with the elites in the niche, however, can be really valuable because as you start getting referrals from them big dogs it is much easier to get traffic, build up your brand and leapfrog over your competition.

Anyways this depends on our own perception of big dogs. And I absolutely agree on continuing to get involved in the community as we could be interacting with a potential bid dog of the future. Absolutely.

      Later on Pat.

      Happy new year!

        HI Adam

My Mum was sick Christmas Day so I was looking after her. Had the traditional Christmas roast dinner the following day (Boxing Day) even though it was sweltering lol

Networking is the key and for all of us we will choose the people to network with that works best for us. I am really happy with the way things are going for my small niche blog and I know 2011 is going to be even better :-)

Sorry to hear you weren’t well over Christmas. Hope you are fully recovered now Adam and happy New Year to you and your family.

    Adam,

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and that you’re preparing for and a new year and 2011.

I agree with what you say. The A-list bloggers are just people like us, they may just be a little bit busier. Like you said the first step is always getting them to recognize your name, after that creating a relationship with them should not be overly difficult.

Christmas was good. To be honest with you Steve, I am actually glad it is over so that I can focus on more important things for 2011.

Being visible, taking advantage of the situation, making as many friends as possible and very few enemies is the way to go. Persistence sure does pay off in the long run.

      Anyways, how was your Christmas?

I’ll have to admit that sometimes I definitely feel invisible to bigger bloggers in my niche. I can think of 2 blogs that I’ve tried to comment on as a way to build relationship. I have second guessed my comments after getting no response. I left especially insightful comments that added to the suggestions on the post, but it’s possible that it could have been interpreted as undermining their authority. Not sure. At least it was worth a shot. I’m not giving up yet.

Thats the spirit TJ – Never give up.

After you tried long and hard and there still is no reciprocation, it maybe time to move on to another prospect. But this also depends on the topic of the blog. You see some people do not comment on the post; even if they like the post because they have nothing to add value to the conversation.

But what you said about them feeling about undermining their authority also prevails in the blogosphere. Or sometimes they just see you as competition; especially in a narrow and competitive niche.

Thanks for the comments man. See ya around!

I like the idea of creating a list Adam.

Lists create order. It helps to start any process with an orderly mind.

I’ve found that persistence wins with this. Big Dogs take notice when you share their stuff, add value with your comments and do so on a consistent basis. They appreciate hustlers because they did the same thing to reach the top.

    Thanks for sharing your insight.

      Exactly Ryan,

Lists creates an order. It guides us to get things done.

I totally agree with you man. Persistence is the key. And doing what it takes like promoting and commenting on a regular basis certainly can make a huge difference. They appreciate the hustlers…yes indeed.

That is what I call adding value to the conversation.

      Thanks Ryan!

    Hi Adam;

Long time I did not come here, I missed your post. I am not a real blogger yet. I am simply a person, with human heart, very natural, and people person, I do not get intrigued with influence and influentialism. This has been the story of my life. But I guess now when I am over the hill I have to start practicing it. If I want to live with those who live it. My first lesson is your blog post. List is awesome, since I am a newbie for learning influence, I have to make a list and work with it.
Learning never ends. I have read the term A-Lister before, But now I have to start judging people who is A Lister and who is not. Or it comes naturally. I guess it will come naturally.

Thanks for the beautiful informative post and enjoy your New Years Eve. Hope You got rid of the flue and feeling better.

Best Wishes for the New Year and see in 2011

I am feeling better now Fran – about 95%; so to speak.

A listers really depends on our individual perception. Like Pat talked about in her comments – a lot of times, you will know the A-Lister of the future just by seeing where a blogger is heading. Sort of like – Morning shows the day…haha.

Anyways, appreciate the comments. You have a wonderful new year.

      See you around!

Hi Adam, I agree with you that getting the attention of elites helps you. Just one link or tweet can get you a lot of traffic if it comes from someone big. It can take a while since they are busy, but also some bloggers are more approachable than others. The list is a great idea so that you can decide when to give up and move on to the next person. One of my plans for next year is to be more methodical about promoting myself, spending more time on people who are helpful, and less effort on angles that aren’t fruitful. This will give me more time to reach out to other bloggers I don’t have a relationship with yet.

Right Jen. Exactly. You see the roundups of blogger’s successful habits post, I recently created here in this blog, turned out to be my most viewed page so far in this blog. This is due to sharing of the post by the elites I included in the blog.

Spending time around the folks that help you and promote your site really helps in laying a strong foundation for your blog’s future.

Happy new year to you Jen.

      Later!
