A successful blog, for example, can be monetized in various different ways, which could help you generate a respectable income. But before the income flows into your bank account, you will have to choose the right niche.
There are 3 factors that you should consider when deciding on a particular market you target:
1. Allow Your Passion to Choose For You:
Creating and establishing a new online business can become a tiring process. The internet never sleeps, and as a result the maintenance of your site becomes a continuous task. If you have a blog in your site then hosting fresh content, replying to comments, and brainstorming new content ideas requires an investment of time.
Allowing your passion to choose the niche you pursue will benefit you greatly. Do you know that people who follow their passion in life never work a day? Sounds strange, doesn’t it! But when you do something you are passionate about, you enjoy the ride.
2. Knowledge is Power:
The knowledge you possess on your chosen field will position your internet business to become an authority on the subject. The posts you publish on your blog echo your knowledge and understanding of the market you target.
Readers want information that is value-adding! If your content is haphazard and clearly error-ridden, potential subscribers will quickly exit your site. It will be wise for you to choose a niche that you are well acquainted with. For instance: if you have reared children and brought them up to be accomplished adults then you are well positioned to start a blog offering parenting advice.
3. The Greater Your Market the Greater the Potential:
A narrow market limits your potential to expand, and it will also hinder your ability to churn-out relevant content for your blog. But if you choose a relatively broad market, you extend your reach to a larger audience, and you expand the subjects that can be covered. For example: if you do create a website offering parenting advice and products for parents that have kids, you don’t have to limit yourself to writing predominantly on parenting advice. You can publish posts and offer products on children’s health, pregnancy, or school and college.
A wider niche will also provide the opportunity for you to earn a greater revenue stream. It will broaden the number and types of products you can promote on your blog.
What is Your Opinion?
Do you believe following your passion will lead to a successful internet business? Would you start a website only to satisfy your passion even if the site was not profitable?

Alex is becoming a popular guest poster. Which is a recommendation in itself that he has knowledge and wisdom. This post has four primary reasons to consider while selecting a market for your business.
So the market has to be producing a lot of revenues, of it must have a potential to make lot of money for every one, which will work better?
Well passion and a great market is a great combination for choosing a market.

Hi Fran, I think when you start it is a good idea to choose a market that has been proven to be lucrative. For example, weightloss, internet marketin, network marketing, wealth creation, real estate, beauty, religion. These are markets known to have people willing to spend money. If you are trying a market, in the hope that there is potential you are taking a risk that maybe too big for a beginner. That is not to say, however, that a totally new thing cannot be a great hit that can take the market like a storm.
Alex,
I agree. Trying for a market that is just based on passion and not profit is a great risk for beginners.
As Fran mentioned, combining both the market potential and passion is probably the best approach. Personally, I would say do the market research first to find a profitable market. Test it for couple of months and see what kind of results you get from it. Once you start seeing the results you might be able to generate passion. If one is to follow passion and dive in head on without the market research it could really be a waste of time. Plus, if you are passionate about a topic today doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to be passionate about it tomorrow !!!
Thanks for the Post Alex. It is great to have you here at Endeavor Online.
Fran, thanks for stopping by to give your valuable insights.
Later.
Hi Alex:
This is not my first time thinking of starting. I have had my product websites, I have done affiliate marketing, for a very little time, and I have had a 15 year established successful business from home, that I had to finally close because of several reasons including my health. I am online from 2004, with ups and downs.
I value your insight to start with a product that has a ever green success potential due to its demand.
Alex I have been to your site, and I like your
presentation there too.

On a personal story (which I think can add a lot of value here); one of the side businesses that I want to start up actually takes into account my own personal blog and one of my other flagship blogs – mostly around building websites and helping people promote themselves online.
I was sitting there trying to think of a business and then it hit me – combine the two! Both are something I’m very passionate about so it won’t feel like work.
(Sorry for being a bit ambiguous, still getting everything setup and don’t want to jump ahead of myself hehe)

Yep, that’s called brainstorming: Often responsible for the most creative ideas and amazing businesses! So you are not going to tell us what this new business idea of yours is… I take it, it is a surprise.
Murray,
I think I know what it is; based on the recent changes you have made in your personal blog. Don’t want to spoil the surprise however.
Good luck on the endeavor brother. Eagerly waiting on your next move Murray!
Hi Alex and Adam
As a successful marketer, Alex speaks from experience. Great to see him here sharing Adam.
I chose a niche I am passionate about. Also did my due diligence as I wanted to eventually monetize so did a business plan, looked at competition and traffic to my chosen niche.
When everything lined up I then went about learning about blogging and continue to learn from visiting other blogs and reading heaps of helpful information.

Hi Patricia, Due diligence (also known as market research) is crucial. A business can die before it starts if you have not done “your due diligence” first. Often that takes a lot of time- but it can save money and time in the long run. Thanks for reading this post.
Patricia,
It is always great to gather ideas from experienced marketers like Alex. He sure does know what he is taking about.
It is a great privilege to have him here.
Do you believe following your passion will lead to a successful internet business?
No. The market itself and the work you do determine the success of the website. Another commenter said she did homework to see if her passion would work. That’s what it takes. Passion is one thing – Reality another. When and where they meet is where there’s lots of action.
Would you start a website only to satisfy your passion even if the site was not profitable? I did just that when the web first started and it has been on the net for most of the past 12 or more years.
Great point. Having a passion for a product is not enough. The money needs to be there too. In other words, there was to be a “hungry” crowd waiting to spend money for this product.
Unfortunately if you want to be making money these days, following your passion is not necessarily going to be enough. Sometimes mixing money and passion and turning them into a profitable business model is a hard, if not an impossible task. A thorough research is always required just to make sure that the thing you are passionate about will make you money in the end. Have nothing to add up on the other two points but I totally agree there.

Spot on Daniel! There are some people that just follow their passion and never worry about monetizing their site, even if their niche has a great market potential. However, like most people that embrace an online endeavor to escape the cubicle nation, just following the passion is not enough. Have to choose a topic that has market potential if you want to make money…It is obvious.
Thanks for the insights brother. It is always great to read your valuable comments.

Hi Adam,
I totally agree with you, especially the point you mentioned about wider niche. Having narrow content or stick with a single niche also will bring us worst bounce rate. Having wider niche on our blog will reduce bounce rate.
Thanks Adam.

“Do you believe following your passion will lead to a successful internet business?”
No. You need more than passion for your topic in order to succeed. You need a passion for writing, for marketing, and sitting at your computer for hours at a time!
“Would you start a website only to satisfy your passion even if the site was not profitable?”
Yes and no. Yes, I’ve done it before, but no, I won’t do it again. If there are things I enjoy AND they’re potentially profitable, why would I choose to blog about something that’s not profitable?
Anyway, great post Adam!
